Below are some of the most significant shifts in the test taking population from 2011:

The percentage of female test takers increased for the sixth consecutive year to 41%, which is up from 39% just two years earlier.  The fastest growing group to mention in the GMAT pipeline is the under 24 year old population, which has exploded since 2007 – reflecting the push for those seeking post-graduate degrees to do so more quickly than in the past, mainly due to the abysmal job market.

These changes reflect the larger trend in higher education for an increasing amount of minority and international students to apply and be accepted to post-graduate programs across the globe.

Harvard Business School has been implementing  many new changes that all focus on collaboration.  Every admitted student is given a face-to-face interview with the admission committee to get a better idea who they are as people, and how they work with others.  Collaboration is ultimately the tool to making a difference in the world.

HBS MBA classes are always diverse.  There is no ideal HBS student.  The admissions committee is looking for students from a variety of backgrounds to present a host of perspectives and get students thinking creatively. Sure they will share common traits such as strong analytical skills,and good leadership qualities.  But the important thing is that the students can work well with each other and bring their own unique perspective to the table, ultimately creating a more comprehensive and beneficial program.

New Initiatives at HBS

Harvard is encouraging undergraduate seniors to apply to HBS throughout the year instead of the usual just during the summer now that Harvard 2+2 Program is up and running.  In keeping with these new changes, Harvard has added new course requirements for first year students emphasizing small group collaboration and hands-on application of the material.  The new course series, called The Field Immersion Experience for Leadership Development (FIELD) is detailed in the 3 Modules below.

1) Leadership Module

The Leadership Module emphasizes small group work and close collaboration with the faculty to provide insight into the best leadership qualities.

2) Module 2

Module 2 will place new student in 14 different cities in 11 emerging economy countries to receive hands on experience in product development exercises.  THe 11 countries will include China, South Africa, and Vietnam, among others.

3) Integrative Exercise in Entrepreneurship

In this module, the student start their own companies, focusing on marketing and customer service.

HBS Financial Aid Information

Harvard Business School encourages all undergraduate students to apply no matter their financial standing.  Financial Aid is not applied for until after the acceptance of the student. Further, the Harvard Alumni have been very receptive to supporting new HArvard students and their education.

Im Herbst 2007 wurde Manhattan Review zu einer interaktiven und informativen Veranstaltung des Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC) eingeladen. Nach einer hektischen Saison in der viele neue Produkte und Kurse kreiert wurden, haben wir die Notizen und Materialien der Konferenz sowie die ausführlichen Berichte des GMAC mal ganz genau unter die Lupe genommen.

Herr David Wilson, Präsident und CEO des GMAC, hielt eine humorvolle, jedoch informative Rede zum Beginn im Bezug auf folgende Themen:

• In Zusammenarbeit mit den MBA Programmen hält GMAC das Niveau der Bildung an Business Schools durch hohe Test-Standards aufrecht
• Das Erscheinungsbild der MBA Bewerber und GMAT Absolventen ändert sich ständig. Einige MBA Programme verlangen in letzter Zeit mehr Berufserfahrung und andere wiederum suchen nach Bewerbern mit kaum Erfahrung
• Studenten an Universitäten sollten den GMAT vor dem Abschluss absolvieren, da das Ergebnis 5 Jahre lang gültig ist

Herr Wilson sprach auch über die geplante Erweiterung des GMAC in Europa und Asien.

Bevor wir aber unsere Analysen der GMAT Trends fortsetzen, müssen Sie folgendes über Herrn Wilson’s beeindruckende Karriere wissen: Der Professor und ehemalige Geschäftspartner von Ernest & Young kommt von der Queen’s University in Canada, bekam seinen MBA von der University of California (Bereley) und Ph.D. von der University of Illinois. Deshalb ist es nicht erstaunlich, dass die Zahl der Angestellten bei GMAC unter Herrn Wilson’s Führung von 6 (1994) auf mehr als 100 angestiegen ist und der MBA Abschluss internationale Beachtung genießt.

Vorbereitungsdauer und GMAT Punktzahl

Angestellte des GMAC teilten den Besuchern einige interessante Informationen bezüglich der GMAT Vorbereitungsdauer und GMAT Punktzahl der Studenten mit. Die Zahlen bestätigten, dass umso länger man sich vorbereitet, desto höher die Punktzahl. Zum Beispiel erzielten Studenten die sich 8-9 Wochen lang oder 84 Stunden auf den Test vorbereiteten (angenommen sie nahmen dafür wöchentlich 10 Stunden in Anspruch) im Durchschnitt 500-540 Punkte. Studenten bei denen die GMAT Vorbereitung 20 Stunden länger dauerte (in etwa 10-11 Wochen) erzielten hingegen im Durchschnitt 600-640 Punkte, also 100 Punkte mehr.

Ähnlich sieht es bei Studenten mit früher und intensiver Vorbereitung aus. Wer sich 10 Wochen lang intensiv mit der GMAT Vorbereitung beschäftigt schafft am Ende mit einer 13% höheren Wahrscheinlichkeit ein Ergebnis von über 600 Punkten im Vergleich zu denen mit nur 1-3 Wochen langer Vorbereitung.

Zugleich wurden bei der Konferenz interessante Statistiken zu den Antworten der Fragebögen veröffentlich. Demnach zu urteilen verbrachten 29% der Test-Absolventen höchstens 20 Stunden mit der Vorbereitung für den GMAT, 24% 21-50 Stunden, 24% 51 bis 100 Stunden und 24% 101 Stunden oder mehr.

5% der Test-Absolventen bereiteten sich gar nicht vor. 9% fingen in der Woche vor dem Test damit an, 23% 1-3 Wochen, 26% 4-6 Wochen, 17% 7-9 Wochen und 21% 10 oder mehr Wochen vor dem Test.

Fazit

Fleiß und Disziplin machen sich am Ende definitiv bezahlt! Neben Glück bringen Wille und harte Arbeit nur Gutes mit sich.
